any advice wud be great.. thanks
A. Best Answer: Hi Debz,
There's no hard and fast rule as to how much you lose - it depends on many factors - exercise (what type, how often, how much effort), diet (balance of food types, amount, how often you eat), and your own metabolic rate. Not to mention smoking, drinking, drugs, stress, sleep, and general lifestyle .. to mention just a few.
Forget the "no pain, no gain" type sayings. Pain is natures way of telling you that you are doing too much!
Start off exercise gently and build up over time. 5 minutes on the stepper this week, 5 minutes and 30 seconds on it next week, and 6 minutes the week after, and so on. Do 10 crunches this week, then 15 next week, then 20 and so on ... gradually build up to your limit where you are working quite hard and getting a little hot and sweaty.
The aim is to gradually increase your metabolic rate (MR) - the speed at which you burn energy. People who don't exercise much have low MRs, athletes have high MRs. With a high MR you tend to eat a lot of food but don't get fat - because you burn it all up.
You need to have a good work out at least 3 times a week, or a smaller workout every day.
A small workout is about 10-20 minutes each day. A good work out is 30 minutes to 2 hours long. If you do a long hard workout you need time for your body to recover from the exertions, usually a day in between sessions.
One word of warning though ... don't get too hung up on weight. Initially you will lose some weight, then you may start putting it back on. This is because over time you will lose fat and replace it with muscle, and muscle weighs more than fat.
Get into the habit of being a bit more active in your life. Walk to the shops instead of driving. When you come to steps jog up them, don't walk. Take the stairs instead of the escalator ... you get the idea, I'm sure.
Diet:- there's nothing wrong with chocolate IN MODERATION. But add to your diet more nuts, fruit and vegetables. Try to eat healthy foods, but don't forgo your treats. An occasional chocolate bar or similar won't damage your toning etc. In fact it will help. If you cut out things you enjoy completely you will eventually come to resent your training regime and lose you desire to continue with it. Have your chocolate, now and again. Make it a special treat.
Cut it down, don't cut it out.
The problem with being a little overweight is that you become self conscious and stop doing things in public that would actually help you lose weight ... like swimming or aerobics (aerobics is really good at increasing your MR).
Probably the best advice I can give you is to stick with your exercise. You won't get immediate, obvious results but it WILL happen if you stick with it. Some people see a difference in weeks, some take months, some longer.
One last thing:- You only get one body in your lifetime. Love it or loathe it, it is the only one you will ever have. Look after it.
Q. Question?
Then the thousands of man hours wasted could be spent on fitness training and weapon training. The money spent on No 1 uniforms and bearskin hats etc could be spent on body armour and better equipment. Agree or disagree?
Alan, I just read your reply about soldiers welcoming the chance of ceremonial duties. You were never in the Army mate!
LOOKS LIKE THATS A NO THEN.
A. Best Answer: David, If you were ever in the army you'd not need to ask.
Be British and PROUD!
Q. Question?
Hello! Basically I have given myself 6 months to get very fit as I am applying to be a Royal Navy diver and cardiovascular fitness is the key requirement to get through selection and training.
In brief, just to give you an idea, a part of the selection process is as follows (and you're wearing a drysuit for the whole thing):
Run as a squad along the bank of the mile-long artificial bank in eleven minutes. Pick up air tanks (about 30lbs) and run back in about 8/9 minutes. Then get in to equipment and swim length of lake. At far end, get out and complete a circuit of sit-ups, press-ups and chin-ups.
I need to be able to do this, on minimal sleep, every day. My facts may be slightly wrong but this is generally what happens at selection.
I am a 22yr old male who has this week given up smoking and junk food. I have six months to get to the relevant level of fitness, whilst working mon-fri 9-5 in an office.
Roughly, what regime should I follow?
Thanks!
A. Best Answer: If you can find a way to go swimming a few times a week, maybe at a local gym. Run three times a week, I would see how you do the first day and up your speed and distance every week. Lift weights on the days you don't run and stretch 20 seconds each morning and night for you whole body (this will help it take the changes to your fitness level without hurting your self. Drink lots of water, up your lean proteins and vitamins.
That's awesome you quit smoking, it was one of my best decisions.
Hope this helps, good luck!
Q. Question?
I love crisps..fizzy pop and processed food...
Im quite slim but recently developing a belly haha :D
which i do not want in 5 weeks time on holiday hehe
What exercise could i do in my house or outside on a feild something FREE and enjoyable that makes you lose a lot and lot of weight( not tenis..golf..you have to pay for the equipment)
Can anyone think of a really good fitness reigime that i can do and food thats cheap but healthy
also ive broke my arm haha so no press ups etc :P
A. Best Answer: well, if a belly is all you really need to lose, then could try a couple yoga poses that could help. surely in 5 weeks it'll help, i swear. (i've been practicing yoga for a few years). yoga doesn't take any equipment and you can do it anytime you like. first, at any time of the day/several times a day:
(1) lay on the floor, staight back, arms to the side, hold your legs straight up. from hip to foot, keep your legs straight, knees straight. you should feel the tightness in your legs and your belly. (also, slowly moving the legs from upright to almost to floor and back up helps even more).
(2) sit on your bottom with legs together, staight out in front of you. with a straight back, lean forward to grab your feet. (you may not go all the way at first, but that's ok. with a short time pf practice, you will). when you grab your feet, use your belly to help you go down further.
(3) lay on your back, legs straight inline. use your belly to raise your legs all the way to your face. keep your knees straight. the longer you hold this position, the tighter you'll feel your belly get.
i hope this helps. yoga can keep you in shape, lean muscle and flexible to boot. good luck!

Q. Question?
I saw a fantastic gym online yesterday and now can't find it anywhere lol. Anyway, does anyone know of any others that can match this, it was 299 quid reduced from 499:
Bench did incline/decline/flat
Squat Rack
Pec Deck
Lat Pulldown
High/Low Pulleys
Bench was detatchable from the multi gym
I can't remember the make, think it was Marcy or possibly Proform but not sure. It was from 'the biggest fitness equipment showroom in the uk' which is based in Doncaster if that rings any bells with anyone, it was an ex-showroom model reduced to clear. Dead frustrating!
Anyway, if nobody knows what this showroom is called, does anyone know of any other great deals like this out there?
A. Best Answer: i looked up on yell.co.uk for doncaster and fitness equipment and found this online store, i hope its what your looking for.
Q. Question?
I need to lose a stone and a half by august. My diet is fine - I'm following weight watchers so am eating under 1500 cals a day. I want to lose fat, not turn my fat into muscle and can only go to the gym 4 times a week - tues, wed, fri and sat. I have an aerobics class on saturday so that's sorted. I really don't want to use the equipment for over an hour each day. My gym has bikes, treadmills, steppers, a rower, cross trainers and weights. Please help me as I don't know what to do...the fitness instructor at the gym is no help.
A. Best Answer: Hi I'm Cute,
Indeed the Gym members are rather reluctant at helping you with equipment but ask them about Joining a stampede of them all run to your feet- Hilarious!
Treadmills/Bikes/Rower/Cross trainer: Are all Cardio workouts,
From my experience the cross trainer was best at loosing kcal, but was harder to keep up with, compared to the treadmill or Bike,
You should pick the 2 of the Cardio machines and workout for 15 minutes each. Try them all out first for for first few weeks, to find which you find comfortable,
Weights is a great way in toning up, unless your lifting 15kg you want be turning into hulk, phew! Start with a weight you feel comfortable with, you should be able to do 10 at ease, then reach to your maximum, take a 60 second break and repeat do this for every time you visit for 15minutes,
You should also have two 5 minute breaks, so in all 55minutes... the other 5minutes should be used as stretching before you use any of the equipment
Take care,
Q. Question?
I went a bit crazy and bought the weighted ball one and the giant elastic band one last night, £9 each - not bad with dvd!
I haven't tried them yet but i was wondering if anyone had tried them, or others, and if they actually gave them a good work out and had good results re fitness and toning?
Thanks
A. Best Answer: I havent tried them but have you ever noticed when in Tesco they gather all the managers together and get them to do exercises lol! its hilarious
